Brief Historical Overview:
The Demarest Railroad Depot is listed on the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places. The Demarest Railroad Depot was built in 1872 and designed by the architect J. Cleveland Cady. The station uses many features of the Romanesque revival style. The Borough of Demarest wished to return the building to its appearance during its period of significance, the late-nineteenth to the early-twentieth centuries when Demarest was a growing railroad suburb. The Depot is significant for its association with the region's change from a self-sufficient rural community to one that was open to broader markets through the introduction of railroad service in the early 1850s.

Scope of Services:
The Office of Herbert J. Githens prepared a Historic Preservation Plan to assess the exterior and interior conditions of the architectural fabric and provide recommendations for restoration and rehabilitation so that the building can continue to serve its community function, yet obtain an exterior and interior appearance that better resembles the original design. The firm was also hired to prepare the contract documents for the Phase I Exterior Restoration and Rehabilitation and to provide construction phase administration services. The Phase I project included restoring the main and tower roofs and drainage systems, reconstructing the missing dormer at the tower, restoring the metal cresting and finials, and repairing structural deficiencies at the roof overhang. In 2003, Connolly & Hickey started the Phase II project, which included the exterior restoration of the masonry, windows and doors, removing the mechanical system from the original track side entrance and restoring this defining architectural feature and installing a new mechanical system within the tower. This work also included restoring the remaining elements of the tower, and restoration of the stained glass window (by others) at the street side entrance. Connolly & Hickey also assisted the Borough in administration of the contract during construction. Connolly & Hickey recently completed the contract documents and contract administration for the Phase III project, which included restoration of the interior beaded board finishes, construction of the ticket master's office, upgrade of the existing kitchenette and restroom facilities and reconfiguration of the balcony-level.
